Desalination Plant
As part of a 4-way water security strategy the South Australian Government is building a seawater desalination plant at Port Stanvac, in Southern Adelaide, to ensure drinking water is available even in times of drought. The Adelaide Desalination Project is expected to deliver up to 50 billion litres of water each year - about a quarter of Adelaide's water supply. The plant will be expandable up to 100 billion litres a year.
Port Stanvac has been chosen as the preferred site due to the accessibility of relatively deep seawater, optimal marine dispersion characteristics, better access to the water supply network, suitable land availability and lower construction costs. The first water will be delivered via the plant in December 2010.
AdelaideAqua has been named as the preferred bidder for construction of the desalination plant. The consortium comprises of McConnell Dowell, Abigroup Contractors, ACCIONA Aqua and United Utilities, which collectively have extensive world-wide desalination experience and strong environmental credentials. Together they will design, build, operate and maintain the plant for 20 years.
A joint venture between respected construction companies McConnell Dowell Constructors Pty Ltd and Built Environs Pty Ltd has been appointed to design and build the pipeline system and these contractors are working with SA Water to ensure the pipeline can be delivered with minimal impact on the community and the environment.
The Industry Capability Network is taking registrations from companies that are interested in supplying to the project - to register or to obtain further information please visit their website located at: www.icnsa.org.au
