Darlington Transport Study
The Darlington Transport Study (DTS) is a major multidisciplinary investigation into future transport options and land use arrangements. In establishing a long-term vision for the study area, it addresses future requirements through to 2031 for all modes of transport - road, rail, bus, cycling and walking - and their potential to activate urban regeneration.
The public transport components form part of the South Australia (SA) Government's vision for metropolitan Adelaide as a transit-oriented city connected by mass transit systems, affordable, safe and efficient public transport, and also safe and efficient bicycle and pedestrian networks, as outlined in the 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide.
The proposed improvements to Main South Road at Darlington form part of the broader SA Government policy to provide for non-stop travel along the strategic North-South Corridor, linking the Northern Expressway, the proposed Northern Connector, the Port River Expressway, South Road and the Southern Expressway.
The DTS is a joing initiative of the Australian and SA Governments to develop concept plans for the study area consistent with Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Agreement to develop more sustainable cities which integrate transport planning with land use.
The DTS proposes the following:
- Duplicating and extending the Tonsley rail line to a new terminus at Flinders University with new stations also servicing the Sturt Triangle and Flinders Medical Centre
- Providing a 15 minute frequency week-day tram-train service on the Tonsley rail line
- Proving a park and ride facility and a new public transport interchange within Sturt Triangle for bus and tram-train services
- Establishing a Greenway (bicycle and pedestrian paths) adjacent to the Tonsley Rail Line to connect to the Seaford Rail Line at Woodlands Park Station and to the Patrick Jonker Veloway adjacent to the Southern Expressway
- Reconfiguring Main South Road between the Southern Expressway and north of Sturt Road into an expressway-standard road incorporating road netowrk modifications
- Grade separating Main South Road as an underpass extending below Flinders Drive and Sturt Road
- Connecting into the Darlington Interchange with the Southern Expressway to provide for two way flow.
The study area includes the Flinders University and Flinders Medical Centre precincts together with Sturt Triangle (a priority location for a transit-oriented development [TOD] identified in the 30 Year Plan) and Tonsley Park Redevelopment Site (former Mitsubishi site).
